South African Passport: DHA Photo Requirements
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) of South Africa requires a photograph of 35x45mm for the South African passport. The photo must have a plain white background with no shadows. The face must be centred and cover between 71% and 80% of the photo's height. The DHA is very strict regarding the visibility of facial features; both eyes and ears must be clearly visible. The photo must be printed on high-quality photo paper.

DHA Smart ID and Passport Biometrics
The DHA uses an Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). The photo is scanned and matched against the live capture at the DHA office. Any significant discrepancy or poor quality in the photo will cause a failure in the ABIS matching process. Our AI ensures the photo is perfectly lit, with a pure white background and correct head scaling to facilitate a smooth biometric enrolment.
Key Compliance Checklist
- Expression: Neutral, mouth closed, eyes open.
- Background: White, no shadows.
