Australian Passport Photo Requirements (2026) — Official APO Guidelines
Getting your Australian passport photo right matters. The Australian Passport Office (APO), administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), uses biometric facial recognition to verify your identity at every SmartGate border crossing. A non-compliant photo — wrong proportions, shadows, or an incorrect expression — can delay your application and cause issues at automated border control. These requirements are sourced directly from passports.gov.au, the official APO website.

APO Photo Rules Explained
Face Height: The 32–36 mm Rule
The APO specifies that your face, measured from the bottom of your chin to the top of your crown, must be between 32 mm and 36 mm. This is the most commonly failed measurement in Australian passport photos. A photo taken from too far away or with the subject positioned too low in the frame will be rejected at processing. Our AI automatically detects facial landmarks to calculate and apply the correct crop for this measurement every time.
Background Requirements
The background must be plain white or light-coloured and completely uniform — no patterns, gradients, objects, or shadows. Shadows behind the subject are among the most common reasons for APO photo rejection. The background must also provide clear visual contrast with the applicant's face and hair. Our tool digitally reconstructs a clean, shadow-free white backdrop that meets these requirements.
Glasses: Removed for All Applicants
The Australian Passport Office requires all glasses to be removed for passport photos. This applies to prescription glasses, reading glasses, and all other eyewear. The only exception is a verified medical condition that prevents removal — and even then, supporting documentation must accompany the application. Vision impairment alone is not an accepted reason; contact lenses are a suitable alternative. Sunglasses, tinted lenses, and transition lenses are never acceptable under any circumstances.
Expression and Pose
For anyone aged 3 and over, the APO requires a neutral expression: mouth closed, eyes open, and looking directly at the camera. The head must be straight — not tilted up, down, or sideways — and shoulders should be square to the camera. Per official APO guidance, do not trim your photo yourself if it is slightly oversized; a fresh photo must be taken instead.
Photo Must Be Unedited
The APO explicitly states that photos must be clear, unedited, and printed on high-gloss, heavy-weight paper. Even minor digital edits — background removal, mole removal, skin-smoothing filters — can affect biometric matching and trigger rejection. The APO's official February 2026 guidance reinforces that edited photos, including those processed by online photo apps, may put applicants at risk of identity fraud.

Online Renewal vs. Paper Application
For online passport renewals, the digital file must be a JPEG at a minimum of 413 × 531 pixels (300 DPI). Our tool exports a file pre-optimised for the APO's digital upload portal, staying within file size limits while retaining full biometric-grade detail. For paper applications, we provide a high-resolution A4 print template with four correctly sized 35 × 45 mm copies, ready to cut and submit with your form.
Important: The APO Does Not Recommend Online Photo Apps
The Australian Passport Office's official website states: "We do not recommend using an online passport photo service or a mobile app. These may put you in danger of identity fraud." The APO recommends using a professional passport photo provider. Our tool provides a precise digital output for your review and recommends professional printing for paper applications.
