The Direktorat Jenderal Imigrasi (Directorate General of Immigration) of Indonesia issues the e-Paspor (electronic passport) which complies with ICAO 9303 standards. The required photo size is 35x45mm. However, Indonesian immigration is known for its strict enforcement of background uniformity and facial expression. The photo must be taken against a plain white background with no textures or patterns. The head must occupy 71% to 80% of the vertical space, and the applicant must maintain a completely neutral expression—smiling is strictly prohibited as it distorts the biometric mapping used at Indonesian automated gates (Autogate).

Autogate Readability and the 'No Smile' Rule
Indonesia's new Autogate system at Soekarno-Hatta and Ngurah Rai airports relies heavily on the photo stored in the passport chip. The system compares the live camera feed with the chip photo. If the mouth is open or the lips are curved in a smile in the passport photo, the algorithm often fails to match the neutral expression required at the gate. This leads to gate rejection and manual queueing. Our AI ensures the mouth is closed and the expression is mathematically neutral.
