When you apply for a New Zealand passport online, you upload a digital photo instead of posting a print. The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) checks that file for type, size, shape and image quality, so a photo that looks fine on your phone can still fail at upload.
This guide covers the New Zealand digital passport photo requirements for file preparation, upload and submission. It explains each technical limit, shows you how to fix common errors, and helps you prepare digital passport photos NZ applicants can submit with confidence.
New Zealand digital passport photo requirements at a glance
Use this table as your checklist. Every value comes from the DIA passport photo pages.
| Requirement | What the DIA asks for |
|---|---|
| File type | .jpg or .jpeg |
| File size | 250KB to 5MB |
| Width | 900 to 4500 pixels |
| Height | 1200 to 6000 pixels |
| Orientation and ratio | Portrait, 3:4 width-to-height |
| Colour | Colour photo |
| Photo age | Taken within the last 6 months |
| Who takes it | A professional service or someone you know. Selfies are not accepted. |
| Pre-check | The official online photo checker |
These limits control whether the upload works. Image quality, covered below, controls whether the passport officer accepts the photo.
Which file type and file size does New Zealand accept?
Save your digital passport photo as a .jpg or .jpeg file. The online photo checker returns a file type error for anything else. If your phone saves pictures in another format, such as HEIC, convert the image to JPEG first.
Keep the file between 250KB and 5MB. Both limits matter:
Under 250KB: the file is too small. Open the original again and re-save it, or use a larger photo.
Over 5MB: the file is too large. Compress it with an online photo tool until it falls under the limit.
Watch for hidden compression. Email and messaging apps often shrink photos. When you send the photo to yourself, choose the actual size option, then check that the saved copy matches the original on your phone.
Pixel dimensions and aspect ratio for digital passport photos in NZ
Your image must measure between 900×1200 and 4500×6000 pixels. Keep it in portrait orientation with a 3:4 width-to-height ratio. The DIA's checker help page describes this as 4:3 (3:4 on a smartphone). Both mean a vertical photo that is taller than it is wide.
| Width × height | Ratio | Inside the range? |
|---|---|---|
| 900 × 1200 | 3:4 | Yes (minimum) |
| 1200 × 1600 | 3:4 | Yes |
| 1500 × 2000 | 3:4 | Yes |
| 4500 × 6000 | 3:4 | Yes (maximum) |
A 1500×2000 pixel file sits comfortably inside the range and keeps plenty of detail for the checker. Crop your photo to the ratio. Never stretch or squash it.
If the checker reports an aspect ratio error, confirm the photo is vertical. Then set your device region and language to New Zealand and English (New Zealand), and try again.
Image quality rules the checker and the officer look for
The upload limits are only the first gate. A passport officer still reviews the picture itself. Follow these DIA rules:
Take a portrait image in colour, within the last 6 months.
Ask another person to take it. Selfies are not accepted.
Leave a clear gap around the sides and top of your head.
Use a plain, light-coloured background with strong contrast against your face.
Remove shadows and objects behind your head.
Wear a head covering only for religious or medical reasons, and keep your face fully visible.
If the photo looks distorted, step back and take a wider shot that includes your shoulders. Then crop it to the correct head size.
Also switch off beauty modes and filters before you shoot. They can change how your face looks, and a photo must show you as you are today.
How to prepare your digital passport photo in 6 steps
Pick a plain, light wall. Stand a few steps in front of it so no shadow falls behind you, and face a window for even light.
Ask someone to take the photo. Have them hold the phone at eye level and take several shots. Pick the sharpest one.
Turn off filters. Disable beauty modes, portrait effects and automatic retouching.
Crop to a vertical 3:4 frame. Use your phone's editor or the passport photo maker, and leave a clear gap around your head.
Save as a full-size JPEG. Confirm the file sits between 250KB and 5MB and measures at least 900×1200 pixels.
Run a pre-check. Test the file with the free NZ passport photo checker to catch shadows, tilt and framing problems before the official test.
How to check and upload your New Zealand passport photo online
You can complete the whole application online, and the photo is the step that most often causes delays. Follow this order:
Test the saved file with the DIA's online photo checker before you start your application. The DIA has reported Safari problems on its site, so try another browser if a page will not load.
Start your application at passports.govt.nz.
Upload the exact file you tested. Do not re-save or edit it, because that can change the file size.
Submit and wait for the assessment. A passport officer still reviews your photo. The DIA currently asks you to allow up to 8 weeks plus delivery for a standard passport.
If you prefer help, you can also get a New Zealand passport photo online from a tool that crops and checks your file, or from a professional photo service. Test the final file with the official checker either way.
How to fix common NZ passport photo upload errors
| Error | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| File type error | The photo is not a .jpg or .jpeg | Re-save the image as a JPEG |
| Aspect ratio error | Wrong ratio, landscape orientation, or device region not set to New Zealand | Crop to a vertical 3:4 frame and set the region and language to New Zealand and English (New Zealand) |
| Photo too small | The file is under 250KB | Re-open the original and re-save it, or use a larger photo |
| Photo too large | The file is over 5MB | Compress it with an online photo tool |
| Does not meet photo requirements | The checker cannot name the problem | Compare the photo with the technical requirements above and retake it if needed |
Passport photo or visa photo: do not mix up the files
The DIA handles passports. Immigration New Zealand handles visas and NZeTA applications, and its limits differ. For a visa or NZeTA upload, the Immigration New Zealand error guide asks for a photo between 900×1200 and 2250×3000 pixels. That maximum is smaller than the 4500×6000 passport limit.
Prepare a separate file for each application, and check it against the rules of the agency that will receive it.
Digital passport photos for babies and young children
The DIA gives specific guidance for babies. Lay the baby flat on a plain, light-coloured sheet and take the photo from above. Keep the baby's eyes open and face in full view, with no people or objects in the background.
Apply the same file checks before you upload: JPEG format, 250KB to 5MB, and the correct pixel range.
